A statistical geography
A ZIP Code Tabulation Area, or ZCTA, is a geographic area created by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical mapping and analysis. ZCTAs approximate the geographic distribution of ZIP Code delivery areas so Census data can be summarized on maps.
ZCTAs are not ZIP Codes
A ZCTA is not a postal code issued by USPS. The Census Bureau constructs statistical areas from census blocks and ZIP Code address information. Some ZIP Codes may not have a corresponding ZCTA, particularly codes used for PO boxes, unique organizations or routes with limited residential geography.
Why the distinction matters
Researchers sometimes use ZCTA data to map population, housing or other census statistics. Those boundaries should not be treated as authoritative postal delivery boundaries or used to validate a mailing address.
Choosing the right data
Use USPS tools for address and delivery questions. Use Census ZCTA products when your task is demographic analysis or geographic comparison, and read the dataset documentation before interpreting results.
